CBGBs PODCASTS

Monday, May 19th, 2008

CBGB’s Demos Festival Challenge was a very successful MacJams Online Event.

The set-up: “You are a band trying to get a gig at CBGB’s and the only way to do that is to send in your demo tape and pray…”

Kevin Jones shaped the entries into a 2-part PODCAST, parts 1 & 2 are listed below, complete with their playlists. Many thanks to the organizers of this event and all Macjammers who participated… (more…)

Chris Cihon: PickQuick Records

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Chris Cihon, better known to most Macjammers as PickQuick Records, is a 39 year old rocker from the Chicago area and has been a member of MJ for nearly 2 years. His tracks all have great production values, are clean and driving, and display excellent rock guitar skills. (He had a long list of posted tracks but has taken most of them down as he reworks and remixes, in an effort to present only his best efforts to the public.)

After playing in numerous Chicago area metal bands for years, doing originals and covers – Sedition, Animosity, Krom, Soul Fight, etc. – he’s decided to start his own record label in an effort to promote himself and his music… (more…)

“jiguma dreaming” is an excellent example of self-produced home-made recording. Neil’s music has a signature sound, a result of his hypnotic acoustic guitar grooves and almost Island sense of ease and dreaminess. His vocals, layered and EQ’d in his unique way, float through each track like a buzzing didjeridu, saying things far more complex than his well-crafted short lines can hold. Lyrics from Gulaga Dreaming come to mind: (more…)

The Jiguma Is Up: Neil Porter

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Neil Porter, know to macjammers as jiguma, is 58 years young and lives on the beach in the middle of nowhere, someplace in Australia. He’s a survivor of early band days, a young man’s rock-n-roll excesses, of a high stress job and the burden of all the secrets a psychologist holds inside (especially one that is a team leader/senior administrator), and now lives in his isolated Eden, connected to the world by the Internet and a powerful soul.

Not only his unique voice, organic grooves, outstanding lyrics and solid sense of melody give his tracks a signature sound. The way he mixes and layers his music is unlike anything I’ve heard. I can tell a jiguma track the moment it starts. (I love that.) If you listen from his earliest to his most recent, you will hear steadily increasing production/mixing abilities, which is one of the things this site gives many members. Plus, his songs have a conscience. His song writing is strong from top to bottom… (more…)
